The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show nears, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
