The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
