Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
