Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
